Inspired by stories and images from the Downtown Eastside around addiction and recovery, the production is created with a multiple Jessie Award winning team of artists. We’re All In This Together is written by Rosemary Georgeson and Savannah Walling in collaboration with a team of Downtown Eastside writers and contributions by Larry Reed James Fagan Tait.  This production is directed by Kim Collier with original music by Joelysa Pankanea and Ya-wen V. Wang, shadow images by Tamara Unroe, and lighting by Adrian Muir.

Featuring live music, a giant shadow screen, and a large cast of thirty community actors, shadow-casters and musicians, We’re All In This Together is a Downtown Eastside style of theatre inspired by the ancient tradition of shadow theatre.

In this contemporary fable, two families from different social backgrounds encounter humanity’s struggle with addiction.  Out of the shadows emerge their dreams and memories, fears, hopes and visions.

As three people employed in the legal – and illegal – global drug business argue over their success in profiting off of human misery, an inner city child dreams of a dragon’s irresistible golden treasure. His young mother struggles with all the things you need to do to survive and live sober in this world, her lost sister struggles to climb back to health, and their mother copes with ancestral memories of dislocation.

In an inter-weaving sub-story, an average family from the suburbs reminds us how simple pleasures can grow into habits that take over and run people’s lives.

The Shadows Project has been made possible with the generous support of the Canada Council, BC Arts Council, BC Gaming, City of Vancouver Office of Cultural Affairs, Vancouver Foundation, Leon and Thea Koerner Foundations, Hamber Foundation, Arts Now Catalyst and Innovation Programs, Carnegie Centre, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre, CTV and the Georgia Straight.
